In a significant step toward promoting food security and environmental sustainability, the city of Beirut is set to host the official launch of the initiative “Beirut Produces Its Own Food”, organized in celebration of World Food Day 2026. The event aims to encourage local food production, strengthen urban agriculture, and foster sustainable development practices within the city.
The initiative is organized by the Cedars Care Association, the Beirut Vision 2050 Council, and their partners, under the patronage and presence of Beirut Governor Judge Marwan Abboud and Beirut Municipality President Engineer Ibrahim Zeidan. Their participation highlights the growing importance of food security and environmental issues on both the civic and governmental agendas.
The event seeks to raise awareness about the value of local food production and the role it can play in enhancing community resilience, particularly in the face of economic, environmental, and social challenges. It also aims to inspire citizens, institutions, and stakeholders to explore innovative solutions that contribute to a more sustainable urban future.
Beyond its agricultural dimension, the initiative reflects a broader vision for Beirut—one in which cities become active contributors to their own food systems while preserving natural resources and improving quality of life. By promoting urban farming and sustainable practices, the project aspires to create a healthier, greener, and more self-reliant city.
The gathering will provide a platform for dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration among experts, community leaders, environmental advocates, and residents who share a common commitment to sustainable development and food sovereignty.
The official launch will take place on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 1:00 PM, at Bab Al Ward Nursery – Horsh Beirut, bringing together a wide range of participants dedicated to shaping a more resilient future for the Lebanese capital.
Editorial Note
“When a city begins to cultivate its own food, it is not merely growing crops—it is cultivating resilience, sustainability, and hope for future generations. ‘Beirut Produces Its Own Food’ embodies a vision where urban development and environmental responsibility move forward hand in hand.”
